Initial Assessment

All services relating to interventional nerve blocks and medical management are covered by the Ontario health insurance plan.

Nerve Blocks

A nerve block is an anesthetic injection targeted toward a certain nerve or group of nerves to treat pain. The purpose of the injection is to “turn off” a pain signal coming from a specific location in the body. The effect of the nerve block lasts longer than the anesthetic action and the goal is to change pain conduction in the damaged nerve and to attempt to calm the nerve excitability for a prolonged period of time.

Medication Management

Medications may be considered in the management of chronic pain. Many categories of medications that assist to reduce pain and improve function include: Anti-inflammatories (e.g. Advil, Naproxen), antidepressants (e.g. Cymbalta), anticonvulsants (e.g. pregabalin, gabapentin), cannabinoids (e.g. Nabilone), and opiate analgesics (e.g. morphine).
